The kinetic energy spent by you is stored as potential energy in the book.

The books store energy in the form of gravitational potential energy once they are placed on the shelf. To place them on the shelf, you ultimately use solar energy, but that is a reach down the line. First your muscles exert a force on the book created by electrical energy, which was created by chemical energy, which was created by sugars from food, which was created in plants by photosynthesis. Heat(friction due to air) is also created as the books move toward the shelf.

I don't know about everyone else, but I use pure willpower and telekinetic energy. I think the books onto the shelf and they obey.
Sometimes I just ask my husband to do it.
