Open Military Conflict began with the Battle of Concord, 18 April 1775.

The British Empire considerred the Colonies to be in open rebellion prior to that by passing the Coercive Acts starting in March 1774.

Officially, it began in 1775 when the British attacked the Continental Army at Concord and Lexington. It could be argued that the British fired the first shots at the so-called Boston Massacre in 1773, when the British shot up a crowd of protesting Americans.

officially on july fourth 1776. in reality, in 1774. maybe even a little earlier depending how you interpret events of the period.
