WSUS is a free service build into Windows XP and other builds of Microsoft OS. It is mainly used to deploy service packs to machines on a network, that are in need of critical updates. If you are not deploying IAVA's via WSUS it is not mission critical that you back the directory up then. More then likely home users would be using Windows Update to stay compliant with service packs and crtical updates. I hope this info help, have a good one.
