What would happen if you told the main person you're trying to keep it from?

Rachel,
I will answer this making the assumption that the circumstances may apply to you at the moment and are looking for the best way to handle it. Because these steps work whether you have other more severe problems or not, I try to make sure I stay consistant with their process. The 8th and 9th step in Alcoholics Anonymous and many other 12 step programs states this:

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

What does this mean? I recognize who I have wronged and became willing to humbly admit my errors to them. It doesn't say they will forgive me... maybe they will... maybe they won't but I do not have to carry the heavy weight of guilt around with me any more. It is a blessing on my soul to release these burdens because they serve no one except to remind me of what not to do in life.

The second part of this is a little more tricky. I make direct ammends except when to do so would injure them or others. You do not go out of your way to cause others harm to lighten up you own load. There are other ways to do so. You can admit to another (third person unrelated to the incident and no direct involvment in their lives) or to your higher power or do it in writing (sort of like journaling but to the person you have harmed without sending it to them). When this is done, both an admission of what was wrong and the pure reasons you now know in your heart that it was both wrong to do to them and to YOURSELF. As you may be acutely aware of, guilt is a form of harm to ourselves that keeps us from moving forward to better things in life. We also harm ourselves by taking advantage of others that harm our relationships with them.

If I admit my wrongs then I can to let it go. As I have said in other posts,"Let go... Let God"

I hope that helps

if it bothers you so much then I say gather the courage to bring it out and you will feel so much better. Depending on the circumstance of course. If it is something that might endanger your life then write it in a diary and you will feel better. Feeling guilt is awful and I can personally tell you that you will feel relief after telling the one you affected.
