It's very appropriate, my little brother is also four and he loves it, there are lots of games for little kids, some of them are even educational. the most popular are the disney ones like finding nemo, cars, chicken little, but also the spongebob squarepants and dora the explorer ones are really cool, and kids love them.

No, I really dont think a nintendo ds is appropriate for a 4 year old. Here is why:
1. They probably wont get what a video game is in the first place. At least not that easily.
2. They could easily scratch or damage the system itslef or the touch screen or the top screen because they might carelessly drop it and what not. Considering the ds to be an expensive item im sure you dont want it cracked in half because he/she dropped it.
3. Younger kids can easily lose things. If they were to lose a ds that wouldnt be good considering it is expensive. Also the games are easy to lose because of their size. They are very small and even hard for adults to keep up with. Also the stylus is very tiny and can easily be lost.
4. Even though there are some kiddy games i'm sure you child will lose interest in them considering there arent very many of those games geared for there age group to pick from.
Those are my main reasons not to get a four year old a ds. I would go for a gameboy sp. My little cousins are about 5 years old and they got gameboys for Christmas and they seem to love them! They are very durable and the games are large ( easier to keep up with) And there is a way bigger library of children games available for gameboys.
Also I would reccomend a leapster L-max instead of a gaming system. Younger children should really be learning instead of playing video games. With the leapster L-max the games are just like video games but your child learns from them. There is a large library of games for this system and the system itself is much cheaper than a gameboy or ds. The screen is a touch screen but it was made more durable because they knew younger ones would be using it. It also has the control pad and a and b buttons for more control on games. The leapster L-max can even be played on the t.v. unlike the other gaming systems. I read many reviews on this item on amazon.com, and many parents said there kids knew more of their letters and numbers when they went to school, therefore making the learning process easier for them at school. The added plus is children dont know they are learning because it is in the form of a video game. This way your child doesnt get bored and it makes learning fun for them. I highly reccomend this over a gaming system such the ds or gameboy. This system was geared for there age group and it grows with them until they are about 8-10 years old.
I hope this helped you out. good luck. Bye.

My daughter got a DS for Xmas this year and she is 9 years old. It is almost too difficult for her.
If your child has superior hand eye coordination it might work, but the games for the DS, even the ones designed for children (like nintendogs for example) require reading skills in addition to hand eye coordination.
I would suggest you wait until at least age 6 before getting them a video game system, at least based on the experience I have had with my kids. Even then I would suggest the gameboy advance as a better "starter."

No, my neighbor is four years old, and for Christmas he got a ds and he snapped it in half the day he got it and sucked on the screen. The Disney games are for 6+ I've heard. 5- are too misunderstanding, lol.

My nephew got his for his 4th birthday and he loves it! Get a Disney game or Nintendogs or a learning game -- just make sure the get the extended warranty! We've had to use ours twice already (user error, I'm sure, because my son is pretty rough with his) -- but the exchange was pretty easy and Nintendo was great to deal with!

actually no...i think thats a little too much for a 4 year old, wait til they grow another 3 years. try getting something that is a v-tech brand or something like that, they are very educational and fun at the same time. also, theyre built for younger children so theyre not as vulnerable to being abused and broken

I think that would be great but you might want to watch him/her when they are using it to prevent damage. I think Strawberry Shortcake is a fun game and my friends 4 year old daughter loves it. Good Luck.

I think so if it's something simple. I wouldn't expect him/her to play Castlevania, but he/she can probably play some of the Disney cartoon games.
