Jefferson quoted John Locke's "Two Treatise on Government" (1690)
For Reference, This was the book that the constitution of this country came from!

What this country has become is exactly what the founding fathers were trying to prevent!

It might be noted that Locke was a philosopher and Empirisist who was considered very liberal, even by today's standards.
Of course the founding fathers would all be considered liberal, even Hamilton who was considered conservative in his day would be viewed as a liberal!

Jefferson believed in the common sense of the people creating revolutions against an abusive government, even if it was their own government. Jefferson kept his butt warm by the fire as an idealist, during the revolution.

Alexander Hamilton did not believe that the common people could do it without strong leadership. He saw too many deserters while he was an aide to Washington during the revolultion. He was a realist who saw real action, tried and true.

Almost all the founding fathers saw a "democracy" (rule by the mob) as bad as a "despotism" (rule by a tyrant), that is why they chose a republic.
