It is a gas fireplace and it was re-lit by a service tech...should i turn the gas off? it has an automatic shutoff valve if the pilot isnt working

The pilot light is lit, the noise is not from leeking gas, it is from the pilot light itself

The orifice for the pilot light is dirty and has some build up. A wire brush will not usually work for this. The reason is that the orifice is actually recessed down in the pilot assembly. You would need an orifice bit to clean it. Each orifice has a number stamped into it and they sell kits with these bits in them that have a corresponding number. The kits are very expensive and are usually only sold to HVAC techs. Either way this is not a fix I would recommend a homeowner to do. The pipe and fittings around the pilot light are easily cross threaded and if you do that then you need to replace the whole pilot light assembly. Call a tech and have them come clean out the orifice. If he doesn't take out the entire assembly then he is not doing it correctly and it might not solve the hissing noise. Once the pilot assembly is out the brass tube that connects to the end of it can be removed and inside there is a piece of metal that looks almost like a sewing thimble. That is the orifice once its is out its easy to clean.

Sounds like the pilot light burner is dirty. Turn gas off and try to clean it with a wire brush but be gentle. If that don't work, you may need a professional to remove it and clean it or replace it.

Easy. Blast some air into the orifice from a compressed air can (with the little long plastic tube attached). It worked like a charm to fix mine in two minutes. I imagine that it dislodged some grit that had jammed in the orifice and created the loud jet of high pressure gas.

I'd say no, an inspector or professional chimney cleaner could tell you more about how you could fix it if it's serious.
