Visitors by Bob Chapman is different to Harry Potter the similarity is the central character is a young boy. The additional characters are stronger than in the harry Potter books. The story is original not a mishmash of other stories and it is well written. it is funny and sad and can be read by all ages. You can get it on Amazon

1.The Earthsea series by Ursula Le Guin. (The Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Furthest Shore, Tehanu)
Wizards, ancient evil, talking dragons. Very well written. A classic and not as complicated as Lord of the Rings.

2.The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix (Sabriel, Lireal, The Anhorsen)
About old kingdoms and ancient magic. Darker than Harry Potter. Top marks.

3.The Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Shroud – about a boy wizard who is bent on being the Government’s most powerful magician, with the help of his reluctant wise-cracking demon. Very funny

4.Keys to the Kingdom (Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday) By Garth Nix –
Normal boy in our world discovers he is the rightful heir of a House that is the manifestation of time and space. He is not a wizard but everything about his adventures is magical. Kids would be able to appreciate this.

Well....

If by as good as Harry Potter, you mean a good set of fantasy series-type books? If so, the answer is certainly. Mercedes Lackey's "Heralds of Valdemar"[1] series, or for that matter, most of her writing, is a ripping good read. Another good author is Anne McCaffrey, with her Dragonriders of Pern series[2]. And of course, Madeleine L'Engle, especially the book "A Wrinkle In Time" and its sequels[3].

In a more sci-fi bent, Robert Heinlein's[4] earlier juvenile novels, while in some cases a bit dated, are still good reads. And the "Dragaeran" series[5] by Steven Brust is also a good read, with lots of action and magic...though both of these last two authors are more geared toward a "late juvenile" and adult readership, as some of the situations and ideas presented are definately PG-13 and above, especially Heinlein's later works.

Also, you have several series baised on Sci-Fi TV shows, such as Star Trek (see Peter David[6]for some good ones) and Star Wars (see Timothy Zahn[7] for good ones there).

Now, I've referenced about a 1/2 million pages of text already, but if you want more ideas, go to your local library and ask one (or all, for that matter) for their reccomendations. Or for that matter, go to your local bookstore as well. These groups are usually - with a few isolated grumps - people who genuinely love books, and will delight in having their opinions sought out. I mean, who doesn't like to be asked for his advice? Usually, the hard part is finding the OFF switch......kind of like around here...

Hope this helps...

If you like the Harry Potter series then you will like Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan. It's a 13 book series about vampires.

The Crystal cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, The Wicked Day, by Mary Stewart. There books about Merlin and King Author. I read them about the same time I read The Hobbit some years ago and I couldn't put them down. Than theirs The Dune Trilogy, if you like science fiction.

I'd recommend the "Joust" series by Mercedes Lacky. The fourth book just came out. All the other selections mentioned also very very good.

Comparable and also excellent is "Eragon" and it's sequel "Eldest" by Christopher Paolini. A third will be written.

Also the Earthsea trilogy by Ursula K. LeGuin;

Another good fantasy book is Book Dragon.
