Compaq Presario Notebook R3000 (AMD64) will not boot. Tried using safe mode, boot from cd, nothing works. Always gets to the Windows XP logo with blue bar loading and then presents the following blue screen error:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
STOP: 0x000000ED (0xC000009C, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I have found information on the web about other boot volume error codes, but not the one I have displayed...
PLEASE HELP ME.... I need to access the files on this notebook to atleast back up, but the computer is new and I want to fix the problem? Thanks for any help...

i just had this problem. try to boot it up from the XP installation cd. and once there, type chkdsk /p, then after that is done, type fixboot, then type exit and restart..it should then reboot into the regular windows. if you have problems, IM me.

Obviously, there is something going wrong with the hard disk, so you should try to back up everything if you can. Now, go into Safe Mode, go into Asseccories, Command PROMPT A black box will pop up that you can type commands into. Click into the command prompt and type this command: chkdsk c: /f/r Make sure it is all lower case, make sure you put the spaces just like I did. Then hit return. A warning will come up saying chkdsk will be run on the next reboot. type y for yes and hit return It will say, on the next reboot, a chkdsk is scheduled to be run on the hard disk. Reboot the computer and let chkdsk run. The computer will reboot and the Windows Start will run and then it will switch to a blue screen that says RUNNING CHKDSK. This will take 5 diagnostic stages and it may take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to complete. Do not panic and do NOT touch the keyboard while chkdsk is running. Chkdsk may have to reboot the computer more than once before it is completed. This is a diagnostic tool to check the hard disk and repair hard disk errors IF the problem is repairable. You might as well go watch TV or something while the computer takes its good ole time. Chkdsk MUST complete in order to use Windows again. If chkdsk cannot repair the error, you may end up having to get a new hard disk and reinstall the operating system. The reason why you want to run chkdsk this way is that nothing else will interfere with the repair. Also, this might be a driver error. If you have recently installed a new driver, uninstall it.

Well, this is one reason I hate Compaqs....
Anyway, unmountable boot volume means that basically the boot sector on the drive is hosed. That said, you should be able to boot from CD. If you have a CD in, and it's not booting, then try to get into the BIOS upon turning on the machine (I don't recall what a Compaq uses, but try pressing F1 repeatedly, or F12, or DELETE - one of them should put you into the BIOS setup).
When you're there, look for the thing that says something along the lines of "boot device" and it's possible that the CD is not the first order in the boot devices. Make it the first, then try again. If the hard drive is the first, it'll try that and never get to the CD.
It's possible you might be able to use a repair tool to fix the boot sector. It's also entirely possible the whole disk is hosed, but don't reformat or reinstall anything until you're totally sure it's irrecoverable.
Consider taking it in to a repair place, and they may be able to get at the disk - even if not to boot from it, to suck the other files off of it.
If it's new, is it under warranty? Ask if it can be fixed and the data preserved.
Good luck.

As you have discovered the first is Unmountable boot drive.
0xC000009C is damaged file system. if it were a desktop I would just remove the HD and install it in another computer as a slave drive and access the information. On a notebook, I don't know how to do that.

Could be anything, but looks like a BIOS/CMOS mismatch in the boot sector. It happens.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
