I believe it is more instinct. It can be observed in babies who have never been told what their expressions have to be mean so it must be knowledge we already have. For instance nobody tells people when they have to cry or when they have to yawn, they are things that we just do.

It is reactive.
A puppy wags it's tail when feeling pleasure of suckling from his mother.

Have a think about it how many times have you tried to stop yourself from smiling or laughing we smile or laugh because we get a feeling a pleasure/joy even though at times we should not show that smile so we hide it.

There are times when over come with sadness we cry even though we dont want some people to see us cry we can not stop it.
