Well, the opposite of old is also young and I have heard them called "young people".

Elderly people are called old people because as a person grows up he develops a way of thinking, a way he see's life and the correct way according to him it should be and some sort of rigidity develops what u see coming out as the "Generation Gap" since these people are more experienced than anyone else they affect the ongoing affairs of living adults who are their sons/daughters the "old" in old people refers to the old thoughts and not their age.

Children arent called new people by the same argument since they dont interfere in imp. decisions and are quite managable.

why do the call it the "terrible twos" in children when in reality it should be called "minipause" just like old people go through menopause. Similiar symptoms most of the time...

It took me getting to be an old people to figure that out.:)

Very Good Question!!!!!Maybe after a child reaches 6 months, they aren't considered new anymore in comparison to the newborns.
Once you reach elderly, there's no looking back....old is infinite.
