what damage can it do to plumb into hot water, if it takes quite a while for the water to be hot from the source, and the element in the dishwasher is sealed.

The dishwasher needs cold water for the rinse cycles. It would be very inefficient to use hot water for washing and rinsing.

I would look at the instruction manual for the dishwasher. If the heater works on a timer instead of being temperature controlled, using hot water could cause overheating, maybe boiling. If you don't have a manual, you can get one off the Internet, Just do a search on the manufacturer's name. You will probably find a number to call if you still have concerns.
