Wanted to do a spa party, but money is tight for some of my friends...so I am wondering if we should just do a brazilian dinner and be done.

Do you have a birthday bar/restaurant where you live? There's one here that offers FREE drinks to the person having a birthday, you get a balloon, and a FREE beer mug just for showing your driver's license. Oh Yeah...they also have a white board and write the person's name on it and how old they are on that specific day. The food there is reasonablly priced too. If you have one (do a google search on "birthday bar" and then put your city and state) this would be excellent for your group of friends to do. If not, try Olive Garden, Red Lobster, etc.

Nah go out for appetizers only party at a restaurant and make them buy their own drinks if they order cocktails.
If they're your friends, they will understand if you have things "tight" for a while but still want to party with them! Tell them no presents please, since they will buy their own drinks.
They make think this is really great!
HEY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY! Go to a place that does the singing and cake thing - and everyone loves that sort of thing (except the person who gets embarrased).

GOD bless us one and all, always!
Happy Birthday!

If your brave and your comfortable with other people buying you undergarments, have a Victoria's Secret panty party. For my mom's 40th a few years back, we made invitations out of VS coupons we gathered or got in the mail, then made the 'door price' a pair of VS panties. ladies of all ages wore their favorite pjs, played white-elephant undergarment-swap, and had a blast. the twist: it was at a huge table for 20 in the middle of Olive Garden. cheap enough for everyone, a $5+pair of underwear and dinner and a night everyone will remember!
it was such a blast, a couple of years later, we had my 18th the same way, at Beni Hana's.
