"Mares come into heat about every three to four weeks from early spring to mid/late fall. In the winter, they may come into heat maybe once every 8-10 weeks, if at all. A "visible" estrus, where the mare may squeal, flirt with geldings, show her vulva and pee in front of other horses to display her interest usually lasts only one or two days or so, though she may be a bit "off" for a day before her heat. Some mares may be obviously in heat, displaying the above behaviors clearly and/or frequently, while others have only "quiet" heats, where they show little or no "symptoms" at all."
