I'm 18 years old, I graduated from high school May 2006. I put off going to college for a semester. I decided to start in January instead, had everything all planned to go to school in Miami. Yesterday was the orientation, and I ended up backing out. The school was in a really bad neighborhood, and it was all just too much to handle. I felt like I was going to have a nervous breakdown.

I decided to come back home and take some classes at the community college, then transfer to a university in the fall. My family was supportive of my decision, but my sisters are saying I made a mistake.

Should I feel bad about what I did? Or did I do the right thing? I'm so confused right now.

I think you made the right decision. Starting a bit later than you expected is better than starting on time but having to put up with everything you hated about the school for the next four years.

The best you can do now, in addition to your suggestion of taking community college classes, is to learn something from this experience and do some research in your schools before making a commitment.

Dont feel bad. I think you did the right thing and your sisters are wrong. Your decision is definately not a mistake.

Talk to the counselors at the community college about transfering. They could probably recommend what classes you need to take and its very important that you do well in the classes that have something do with your major.

good luck :-)

You did the right thing. You saw that the university wasn't for you and you made the desicion that you felt was best for YOU. It's your future and you shouldn't base your desicions off of your sisters especially if the rest of your family supports you.

Community colleges are a good way of starting off and working towards your future. Just stick with your desicion this time and try not to switch around too much. You'll be fine!

Miami, Florida, correct?

I think you made the right move. I've lived in South Florida a very long time and I wouldn't want to go to college in Miami either.

There's a lot of bad neighborhoods down there.

You made the right choice: Your safety and your comfort is more important than when you went to college.

Once again, don't feel too bad but know that you did make a mistake in not researching this college in Miami when the time was right. This would have allowed you to see if you fit in this campus sooner and given you the opportunity to apply to some other colleges.

At least you didn't quit entirely. Community college is a great stepping stone for many people. Think about it like this....you'll have 12 or so hours out of the way that will transfer, and you paid a lot less. Just be cool, stay in school.

Naw your good. you had a bad vibe and you followed your instincts, that is wise. If you do not feel comfortable in a certain place you could never learn anything. You would be wasteing your time and the staffs. Nothing ventured, but you did gain some wisdom and insight. Allways remember this one thing, you are attending college for your good. Yes parents and stuff will be pleased and yes they matter, but the lessonsand college is for you.

Don't feel bad. You didn't plan properly but learn from your mistakes.

You did the right thing. Better to be somewhere you are comfortable.

Not sure what college in Miami is in a really bad neighborhood...

Don't feel bad about it.

But do learn from this experience. Be more careful next year.

Good luck.
