All of the ills of the earth are released, such as sorrow, anger, and jealousy. At the bottom of the box however is hope which is the only way to get all of the ills back into the box.

Opening "a Pandora's Box" refers to a myth of ancient origin. It was said that Pandora was given a box (I've heard versions where the box was given to her husband as well); it was very beautiful, but she was forbidden to open it. She thought that something so beautiful must have even better things inside of it, however, and eventually gave into temptation and opened it. As soon as she did, out flew all manner of problems that spread throughout the world, wreaking havoc everywhere they went. Pandora tried to shut the box, but it was too late; all the evils had escaped into the world, to inflict their miseries on manking. Only one thing was left in the box - that was Hope. Metaphorically, then, if you open a Pandora's box, it means you unwittingly involve yourself with unpleasant things - usually more that you expected; it also often means that if you had left things alone (if you hadn't opened the "box"), it would have been better.

In the myth, when Pandora opened the box her husband was given and told never to open, she released all of the ills upon the Earth. She also released hope. She opened it out of pure curiosity.

If someone tells you that you're really going to open Pandora's Box if you do x, that means that doing x is going to cause all sorts of truly unnecessary problems. Like if you tell Bob what a jerk he really is, he's going to get mad, his brother's going to get mad, his brother's girlfriend, and, before you know it, you've cast your entire social group into a bitter fight.
