quantitative chemistry (Rosalind Frnklin and X-ray spectroscopy)
chemical modelling (Watson & Crick)
Chargafg discovered the fact that = T and G= C
their predecessors, of couse, first isolated nucleic acids, the building blocks of DNA

If you are talking about the structure, the men who did it
"Crick had migrated from physics into chemistry and biology, fascinated by the line "between the living and the nonliving." Watson had studied ornithology, then forsook birds for viruses, and then, doing postdoctoral work in Europe, took another sharp career turn. "
and were working molecular biology. The chemical content of DNA was determined earlier and the function was part of Watson & Crick's discovery. The genome - the arrangement within the DNA is very recent.

The role of DNA in genetics was shown by O.Avery at al. in 1944, but I guess that this was not your original question. If the discovery of the compound called DNA is to be investigated, I guess that the main steps were as follows: - empirical formula of DNA was determined by chemists already before 1944 - the fibrous shape of DNA molecule was known by geneticians already 1955 (ref. J.D.WATSON 1968) - the architecture of DNA was finally solved by Watson and Crick I am afraid that this doesn't help you to have just one answer. Watson & Crick were definitely those persons who "invented" the double helix structure of DNA, but some other scientists have already found out the DNA is a fibrous molecule and, before that, the chemical composition of deoxyribonucleic acid has been determined. My opinion is therefore: the final knowledge about the structure of DNA has achieved by the successive activities of 1) chemists (elementar composition & empirical formula) 2) biochemists (primary ideas about the role of DNA in genetics) 3) physics (optical methods to find the basic geometry of DNA as a long molecule) 3) geneticians (to solve the 3D structure of DNA in cells) Have a nice day, however! Greetings, Silberstein
