I agree with parts of the previous answers. Women were oppressed for a long time so now it's less threatening for us to have negative attitudes toward men than it is for them to have negative attitudes toward us. Not to open up a whole other can of worms but it's basically the same as it being more acceptable for black men to have attitudes toward white men or non-Christians to resist Christianity.

The powerful, or more historically powerful, are always more prone to criticism, just because they are historically on top. It's safe to kick a stable structure.

i think it is more socially acceptable in our culture (america) because people that disrespect men as a whole are women and in america women are the object of all desire and they know it, hey i am a happily married man and i will tell you as a guy we have to take some dirt once in a while. however the reason it is so widespread is because there is no consequence for the misandrist, if i were to hate women i would have a punishment in our culture, but they do not. ehh...what are you gonna do cry about it. it is also possible that we are experiencing the backlash of somewhere around 4,000 or so years of brutal oppression of women and anyone not white if you think about it. so maybe we should just take our forefathers lumps and learn from the experience. just my thoughts.

Because people do not have the courage of their "politically correct" convictions to stand up for the "rights" of those who vilification and persecution has become fashionable. Misogyny in supposed to be a crime, so why then are women free to make "penis" comments when in fact they are referring to a perceived ideological stance? Why? Because people are too scared to speak up, that is why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
