I've had my period for almost 2 years now and i'm still using pads. I can't help but be totally paranoid about tampons and am very afraid because the one's my mom gave me are about 4 inches long. My flow can be pretty heavy sometimes and I even leak occasionally, but part of me is just to afraid. Also, it affects my sleep gravely. I can only sleep on my back in fear of leaking and wake up every 2 hours to go to the bathroom. (also a nuisance at school) any advice?

Please make the switch quick! I had the embarrasing experience of leaking at school with the pad and use to dred that time of the month and want to stay home. I had a pretty heavy flow as well and would leak and was also paranoid at night and I wish I had chosen tampons a lot earlier. I haven't had an accident since! It's less mess, more convenient, and you can sleep in them. So no more getting up every two hours or sleeping on your back; I toss and turn with no worries. I have not had any leaks I dance, cheer, swim, run, stuff I did not want to do with a pad. I even had to go to this nature camp thing during that time of the month I threw a box of tampons in my bag and spent more time worrying about what bathing suits to bring. I advise that you use pantiliners until you get your timing for changing them out down. And change often! Like someone said earlier, they have different absorbencies so on your heavier days choose a heavier absorbency. They sell them in larger boxes of assorted absorbencies that range from light to heavy. I use the Tampax brand specificallyTampax Fresh and it gives me excellent protection. Last, even though they look long, you shouldn't feel a thing, if you do its probably not in far enough; if it's been in for a while and you start to feel it, that means you need to change it quickly. But yeah make the switch so you can focus on what's going on at school not with mother nature.

I have had my period for 12 years. I have never used tampons. I personally don't like them. I put them in correctly (trust me, I know my body!), but I can feel them.. no matter what size I use-tried the teen kind also. People always try to tell me that I am putting them in wrong, but I am not an idiot.. I know how to put a freaking tampon in!!! My gyno told me that it is normal and that some women just don't feel comfortable when they use them.

BUT... if you are part of the 99% of women that do feel comfortable.. the tampon cannot be 4 inches long. It should be about 1 1/2-2inches. Try the teen size to start if you are nervous. Follow the directions in the box (they really are helpful). You may find that a different position is best for you.. whether it be sitting on the toilet or standing with one foot up. It just depends.

Never wear a Tampon to bed, as it is too long in the body! Not good for night but great for day as you can change it every 2-3 hrs.As for staying awake half the night and worrying about "leaking", that is so unnecessary, a large plastic bag over your mattress will prevent stains on the mattress, you will get the sleep you need and deserve, and be more alert in class! Not fun, But hey, part of life! Do not let it get you down! Good luck!

It will help answer some of your questions about tampons. I've always used them and never had a problem. They're usually pretty good for heavy periods, you'll just need to change them more frequently. I think once you try them you'll be hooked, they are so much more comfortable then pads. They also make super absorbency ones which I know sounds huge but they're really not. Just relax and it'll be an easy thing to get used to.

Don't be afraid to try tampons. Also if you are worried about leaking on your bed, sleep on a towel. That is what I do, cause I wear a heavy pad to bed when I have that time of the month. Then you don't have to worry and it won't affect your sleep.

Don't be afraid to use a tampon they have directions with pictures. If you switch to tampons wear with a pantyliner that way you don't have to worry about leaks. At night you should wear a pad anyways, tampons should be changed every 4 hours or so.

I hate pads!! I was scared to use tampons at first also, try the Pearls, they are smaller and much easier to insert. Although some tampons look big the whole thing doesn't go inside of u. The first couple of times you use them you are not gonna put it in right, it takes practice but I love tampons. And you will too.

You've received a lot of good advice. I also caution you not to wear the tampons @ night due to toxic shock syndrome.
If you leave tampons in too long it can cause bacteria to grow,
wearing them during the day when you can change them
frequently is better.

tampons are totally ok as long as you change them at least every eight hours the tampon itself is not really four inches long just the applicator is you should read the directions that come in every box first and there are i think its either Tampax or Playtex that's for teens you could try those i use Tampax pearl and its so much more comfortable than pads
