There wasn't much of one until Tsaikowsky wrote a beautiful ballet called "The Nutcracker" set during a Christmas party for a young girl. It starred a nutcracker shaped like a soldier who was really a prince in disguise. Because of the beloved music and fantasic dances, "The Nutcracker" is a timeless Christmas classic.

Other than that, nutcrackers are simply a means to open nutshells to obtain the meat inside. Some are carved and decorated in fanciful forms.

Well, you know that one ballet? I think it's called the Nutcracker or something. Well, it's when a nutcracker comes to life and takes this girl to his kingdom to marry her. It all happens on Christmas while the girl was dreaming.

In many countries it was traditional to give fruit and nuts as gifts. The Nutcracker ballet that we know is based on a Russian folk tale.
