A safety is 2 points scored by the defensive team by stopping an offensive play inside of the Offense's end-zone.

Tackle the player trying to run the ball out of the endzone before he makes it across and you earn 2 points.

You also get a "free kick", which means the team you just scored on has to kick the ball back to you.

Whenever the team with possession of the football is downed in their own end zone, it is a safety. Two points for the team who gets the safety. In the Dallas/Seattle game, the player who took possession of the ball went out of bounds in the end zone rather than staying inbounds and that qualified as a safety instead of a touchdown.

Acutully, a safety is not limited to where a quaterback is sacked in its own endzone. It is when an offensive player is tackled in his endzone or if an offensive fumble is recovered in the endzone or if the fumble goes out of bounds once it enters the endzone. When a safety occurs, the defense is awarded 2 points and recievs the ball in the form of a punt taken at the 20 yard line by the team that either lost a fumble in the endzone or was tackled in the endzone.

When the Offensive player holding the football is tackled in their own End Zone. Safety. 2 points for the opposing team plus the opposing team gets the football on the next possession too.
