Certified Public Accountant

A CPA has to complete 150 hours of college and pass an excruciatingly difficult test 4 part test over 18 months....it has over a 70% failure rate.

Beyond being "just an accountant" a CPA is considered to have the faith of the public in protecting their interest. This is considered proved by completing the additional hours of school and passing the test.

A CPA can work in many different fields. Yes, many of them work directly for the public by completing tax returns, etc. But many other CPA's work in auditing firms, or for non-profits, many head the accounting departments for hospitals, banks, schools and almost every kind of business you can think of.

CPA's track inventory, assets, liabilities, taxes, costs, profits...etc.

CPA's investigate fraud, theft & money laundering.

CPA's do almost anything, and the job responsibilities are too many to list.

And in response to the first answerer....you cannot even compare a CPA to an H & R Block employee. H & R Block employees are taught how to use the H & R Block software and prepare computerized tax returns. If it's not in the software, they can't do it.
