Will I have to have a hysterectomy? Is there something else I can do?And could it kill me if I don't have surgery?

If there are no symptoms and they are not bothering you, they are left alone- otherwise surgery is done. Surgery can either involve a myomectomy in which they are removed, or a hysterectomy. A newer treatment called uterine fibroid embolization can also be done, in which the fibroid is shrunk or destroyed by blocking off the artery that supplies blood to them. You can read more here

What tests did you have to show it? pelvic ultrasound? did they tell you how big it is? You don't have to have a hysterectomy and no it won't kill you but it can get big and painful so you need to nip it in the bud now. There are lots of things they can so, they have just approved laser surgery, there's procedure called embolization where they cut off the blood supply to the fibroid and it dissolves, they can remove it without a hysterectomy just remove the tumor, or you can try birth control and hormone pills to shrink it and possibly dissolve it. I have been on Lupron, which puts me in menopause NO PERIODS for 1 year to think an ovarian cystic mass that was 10.1 cm very large, they told me surgery and removing the ovary was the ONLY option which was not true, I got a 2nd opinion and liked the new dr better, she said cutting the estrogen can solve alot of female problems, I had endometriosis, 2 fibroids and that huge mass, now I have ONLY the mass left at 5cm and it's still shrinking, I get a shot every 3 months. Side effects are major hot flashes but it's worth it not to be laid up a long time from surgery. Ask about other options and see another doctor for a 2nd opinion if your current doctor only says hysterectomy. That's archaic.

Fibroids are NOT cancer and can not kill you. There are no effective treatments for fibroids except their removal. Some fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit (and larger). The older you are the more likely you are to have them. They are harmless and pose no threat as long as you are not experiencing any problems from them such as pain or excessive cramping. They will not normally interfere with a pregnancy. There are medications on the market designed to inhibit their growth but are only approved for very short term use. Again, the only permanent treatment is to remove them. Whether or not they will remove the fibroid(s) only or take the entire uterus (hysterectomy) depends on your health and the size and number of fibroids. Ask your doctor for information and literature on the subject. I had very large fibroids which WERE effecting my health as they were pressing on my siatic nerve and causing leg pain, I therefore opted for a hysterectomy. I did not want any more children, therefore it was a good option for me. You need to talk to your doctor to determine what is best for you.

steve`s gal gave u the best answer in my opinion, so my answer to your question is the same. I had several fibroids, the only symptom I experienced was very heavy menstrual periods, so after five years of putting up with that I opted to have the uterus removed. Today drs. r more likely just to remove or shrink the fibroid and leave the uterus intact.

You need a D&C (dilatation and curettage) It is an outpatient procedure, You will be put to sleep. It is when they scrape out the uterus. The whole thing last about 10-15 min. I had it done because of a fibroid. That was three years ago. After that every thing has been fine.

My mother had fibroids and they made her have heavy periods. If there are not too many of them and if they can be removed, the doctors will remove them no problem. If they are not removed the can grow very large and you will have a major problem with too much bleeding. If you ar out that is a doozy cause you will have to change pads like every hour. Of course they may come back so you should have your regular check ups to make sure everything is okay. Yur doctor should have explained all of this to you when he/she diagnosed you.

I don't think fibroids are cancerous. Calm down.

Follow whatever instructions the doctors told you.
