There are some instances that adding the word "up" gives it a whole different meaning or makes it more better sounding or grammatically correct. i.e. you encourage a person by saying :
" Don't give up". The word "up" is part of the meaning it conveys, because you cannot convey to the person your message if you simply say: "Don't give." It has now a different meaning.

it gives more flavor to the meaning of the word. Anybody can wake, but when you add -up, it becomes clearer and people can get a better picture of the action. If you're writing a story, it can be the difference between the book selling and the book selling out.
