My 11mo old son recently has been diagnosed with a severe milk allergy, and I am at my wits end. I am scared with everything he comes in contact with and I don't know what to do. My question is can I feed him food from an Organic food store? Also, are there any recepies out there of cakes. His birthday is on the 22nd and I would love for him to have a cake to put his hands in.

Thanks,
Katrina

My son is also severely allergic to milk protein. Organics are NOT okay unless they don't have milk. You will find a lot of what you need in the organic aisle, though, because they are not processed as much. The best thing you can do is educate yourself about the different names milk goes by and read all the ingredients every time. For example, life savers candies have milk...who would've thought that?! An easy thing to do at home is to designate a cupboard as a "safe" cupboard and only put foods he can have in it. That way when someone else is watching him or you are tired/in a hurry, you can grab something and know it is okay. As far as cakes go, I find the cheapest are usually the ones without milk (same goes for bread) as milk is an "expensive" ingredient. Some of the staples in my house: Margarine: Smart Balance Light (has to be the light), Bread: generic, milk: enriched rice milk (the soy seems to be too thick to be thirst quenching), cheese: veggie slices, yogurt: o'soy yogurt, bisquick for pancakes (make with rice milk) or biscuits, hellman's canola mayonaise, oreos...etc. You have to be SUPER watchful...the flavoring on the roast in the meat case at the grocery store has whey in it, sheesh! And do your friends/day care let other kids walk around with food (like crackers) that they will want to share with your son?

All in all, it can be a hard diet to accomplish, but it is so worth it to see your child healthy. I've been doing it for 3 years and it is second nature by now. You DO get used to it. PS: your son has a chance of growing out of it (desensitizing) as he is so young...do your best to have him NOT exposed AT ALL to milk protein and have him rechecked (with a RAST test) in 18 months.

Good Luck!

Organic only means it is grown without pesticides. You need to find out all the different terms for milk/milk products (ie: whey) and READY EVERY label. It will be a lot of work at the start but you will start knowing what products to avoid. Be careful on candy (later of course) b/c they use whey power which is a milk product. Check on line for some support groups and maybe you can find some tips.

Good luck!
