I'm 16 years old. I started dating this guy when i was 14 and he was 17. Which wasn't illegal at the time. But, we broke up, and now are wanting to date again. He is scared that he will get in trouble if we date because i'm 16, and he is now 19, turning 20 in a few months. My parents both approve. So will he get in trouble, or not? This is in Mississippi, by the way.
Thanks!

Actually, dating someone, regardless of their age, is not a crime. It can only possibly be considered a crime if sex is involved and one of the individuals is under the age of consent. In fact, in the state of Michigan, a relationship such as your's, even if it is sexual in nature, is completely legal. From the looks of it, the age of consent in Mississippi is also 16 (see the link in my source). So to answer your question, no he can NOT get in trouble for dating you.

Ever heard of statutory rape? Basically, whether there's consent or not, the girl is a minor. As a minor, the law sometimes says you can't determine what is best for you. Even if your boyfriend is only 3 years older than you.

The law treats it differently if you're 17 or 18 (I'm not sure the age). You should definitely consider not being sexually active with your guy. Actually, at 16, you probably shouldn't be sexually active anyway.

Just my thoughts. You seem like a smart person. Use your best judgement and talk to your mother and your boyfriend about it. Talk to your counselor at school. They may be able to help and shed some light on the situation.

Dating is fine, as long as you don't do more. I think it's legal in all states for someone 16 or over to marry as long as the parents consent. I would assume the state want a couple to date before they marry.

If you were 20 would you want to date a 16 year old guy? Why can't he find somebody his own age?

There's something wrong with your parents too.

just because your parents are fine with it doesn't mean they won't change their minds. also,if you two are planning on having sex, you need to check your states consent age. in most states it's 16, but check. find out the law before you do anything beyond kissing. this same situation actually happened to me, i was 17 and he was 21. i was to old for the police to do anything but the police allowed my parents the charge me with being an "unruley juvenile" i got house arrest, probation, community service, and had to write an essay on how to become a better citizen. be careful, my parents approved for over a year before they changed their minds.

It seems like the legal consensual sex age in Mississippi is 16 so you should be okay, especially since your parents approve.

Just asked my husb a Justice Court Judge (Mississippi)...you can date him legally IF its to a movie, out to eat....and NO sex involved....that is where you cross the line from legal to illegal. Just stay out of trouble with no alcohol or drugs or then he could be arrested and charged with contribuiting to the deliquency of a minor

No, I don't think it would be a problem at all if for one thing your parents are not against your relationship with that guy, they approved , so there shouldn't be no problem.

i don't think it is illegal as long as you two aren't having sex. which you shuouldn't anyway being 16 and not married. but if your parents don't mind then it should be fine if you two date.

Isnt it illegal only if you guys have intercousre? Like statutory rape? And, if your parents are ok with it, then hopefully, no one will press charges.
