thing is, my family is not too wealthy; my parents split up, and now I am living with my jobless mom. Everybody their expects me to have nice things, and be able to give nice things to... I don't really have much of either, and so am looked down on. I am going to this school so I can get a good education, and that matters more to me than friends in the long run... Most of the other schools around me aren't very good. What can I do?

It sounds like your parents are making some financial sacrifices to send you to a good school, so you should be really grateful for this opportunity and make the most of it. Do as well as you can in school and get that education for your future. School only lasts a few years, and you've got the rest of your life ahead of you.

In the meantime, it's possible you could make friends through extracurricular activities. If you are good at sport, or music, or journalism, then usually people are less interested in how much money you have.

Otherwise, if despite your best efforts you can't make friends, then seek a social network outside of school. Church, youth clubs, volunteer work - stuff like that where people don't care where you come from, but for the person you are inside.

I had a similar experience...went to a private school with wealthy people, and there was poor lil ol' me; sometimes we had the phone turned off and such...yeah, it was really embarrassing at the time!!

A couple of things that helped were that I was really smart and so was able to distinguish myself with good grades as I got older, and was even elected to various class positions, and was the homecoming queen. Also, I had a job, and as such had more disposable income than any of my friends.

If it helps any, and it might not, now I laugh about being the poor student in the rich kids' school.

AM SOOO VERY SORRY YOUR GOING THRU THIS STAGE IN YOUR LIFE.

BELIEVE ME I KNOW THE FEELING YOU ARE GOING THRU.

BUT IT MADE ME STRONGER INSTEAD OF LETTING THEM BEAT ME. I WAS NOT FROM A WEALTHY FAMILY YET MY FATHER WORKED VERY HARD TO PROVIDE US THE EDUCATION HE THOUGHT WE NEED IT.

IF YOU KNOW THAT OTHER SCHOOLS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THE ONE YOUR IN, THEN YOU KNOW YOUR PARENTS ARE MAKING A HUGE EFFORT TO KEEP YOU IN IT.

I KNOW IS HARD FOR ANY ONE TO KNOW YOUR PARENTS ARE DIVORCE, BUT YOUR NOT THE FIRST NOR WILL NOT BE THE LAST STUDENT THAT HAS PARENTS THAT ARE DIVORCE.

IF NO ONE WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND THEN IS THEIR LOST NEVER YOURS. TRY TO BELONG TO A CLUB AT YOUR SCHOOL.

IF YOU NEED TO GET SOME POCKET MONEY, IN YOUR SPARE TIME, TRY TO DO SOME ODD JOBS AND TELL YOUR PARENTS WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS.

TRY TO SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A RAINY DAY, JUST IN CASE.

SO CHIN UP AND WALK PROUD ALWAYS WITH YOUR HEAD UP HIGH. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE ASHAME OF.

So what if you're not wealthy?
Acceptance is they key.
I wouldn't not hang out with someone if they were in a lower social class than me.There are bound to be people who understand you.

Things that don't kill you will make you stronger. If accceptance as a person is dependent on income...are they worth it? I think not.
