Banana's are grown from side suckers. Banana plant which you see is actually a pseudo stem, those are leaves which come out of the ground. the stem is below. The suckers which grow aside can be removed and can be planted. Nowadays you get tissue cultured plants and many nurseries must be having it. There are many varieties but i would suggest that you go for the dwarf type which grows to a height of 6 ft. and can yield anything between 50 to 70 bananas/fingers. it grows in warm climate. The banana varieties which dont have edible fruits are for ornamental purpose and that where you misunderstood

I have grown banana plants and I always started my plants by removing sections (at the base ) of an existing plant. you will need to find someone that has a banana plant that will let you have a section or go buy one. You can not plant a banana and grow a banana plant.

Are you asking about planting a banana from a grocery store?!?

You won't have any luck in getting a banana tree from it. Your best bet is to contact a nursery (either local to you or online) and get a plant cutting and then follow their instructions.

FYI: you won't get bananas that are very tasty but you will get a nice specimin.

Banana trees multiply and produce small shoots or trees that you can get from anyone who has them planted already. In the south they die down in the winter and come back out in spring if you don't disturb them. The secret to growing a good banana tree is water water water everyday or at least every other day. They LOVE water. They will grow taller if you just keep watering them. I started out with one and now have probably ten in my yard.

I know when I lived in Maui, you had to cut down the banana tree after you harvested the bananas , to let another tree grow up. You don't keep the same banana tree year after year.

No, you need to buy one. They have to flower and go to seed. A bananna won't do that. They are the fruit and not the seed. They sell plants in larger garden centers they are tropical so they will not be cheap.
