It written by John Denver in 1967 during a layover at an airport in Washington and was recorded by the Chad Mitchell Trio that year. Others had covered the song that year, including versions from Spanky & Our Gang and Peter, Paul and Mary; however, it only became a hit when the latter act covered the song again on Album 1700, their 1969 effort. It turned out to be their biggest (and final) hit.

Leaving on a Jet PLane was originally written and recorded by John Denver in 1967.

Though it has been recorded by many other artists.

Peter, Paul and Mary (1967)
Ray Stevens (1970)
Frank Sinatra (1971)
Mary Wells (1993)

There is a great site on the web called Secondhand Songs which lists who originally records and writes songs. It's very interesting.

You might like to check it out.

I'm pretty sure that Frank Sinatra did it first......Here's the lyrics to the song...which is the same as Peter, Paul, and Mary......

Leaving On A Jet Plane
by Frank Sinatra
album:
All My bags are packed
I'm ready to go
Standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye

But the dawn is breakin'
it's early morn
the taxi is waitin'
and he's blowin' his horn

Already I'm so lonesome I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you'll wait for me
hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
don't know when i'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go...

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now they didn't mean a thing

Every place I go I'll think of you
Every song I sing I'll sing for you
When I come back I'll bring you a wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you'll wait for me
hold me like you'll never let me go

Because I'm leavin' on a jet plane
don't know when I'll be back again
leavin' on a jetplane dont know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go.....
