I've had HPV for 2 years now, and it hasnt gone away. My dr. told me it goes away on its own. I have to get a pap test every 3 months and I am so sick of going. I know it can save me from getting cancer. So far I am in the middle, there was a sign or pre cancer cells. My dr. wanted me to get surgery to cut away where the bad cells were, but he sent me to an gyno and he said not to do the surgery. I dont know what other options I have...... anyone else going through the same thing??

Well I'm sure that my Dr. didnt lie to me and tell me that it goes away on its own. He said it takes a long time to develop into cervical cancer, but he told me it would eventually go away or turn into cervical cancer. and not all HPV causes warts. I didnt get them. And my husband doesnt have warts either.

He did send me to a gyno to get surgery, but the gyno did not recommend it. My dr. is a regular family dr. It just stinks, whnever I get back my pap tests its always abnormal, which means I have to get a colposcopy and they are very painful. and then they get those results and everything is the same as before. i guess i will just see if I can go every six months.

dont think I had the HPV DNA test, I do know that there is already pre cancer cells there. So I am guessing that I have the kind that can lead to cancer. I think I will jsut make an appt. to talk to my dr. about this and if he cant help me clear anything up its time for a new dr. thanks everyone!!

I have been dealing with the same for almost 2 years. My doc told me most people's immune system takes care of it. of course, not mine! I just had the cryo surgery. Its supposed to take away the abnormal cells, so new ones can grow back. Why did your gyno tell you not to have the cryo? It seems to me, that if these cells can progress to cancer, and they are not going away, that you would want to be rid of them. I'd say 2 years is long enough to be waiting for your body to heal. You should get a second opinion.

I also am trying for kids.....well....would like to. I think it is a good idea that you take care of the abdnormal conditions first, before trying to concieve. You dont want the condition to worsen while you are pg, then be in the predicament of putting your life at risk, or the babies life? See what Im getting at? But seriously, get a second opinion. The cryo surgery is not that big of a deal.

There are over 60 strands of HPV. Some are more likely to cause warts and some are more likely to lead to cancer. The ones that can lead to cervical cancer are classified as "high risk." You should find out if you have had an HPV DNA test (not just a regular pap smear but no more involved). This test will tell you if you have a high risk strand. There is also a newly developed vaccine for HPV -- and even though you already have it, getting the vaccine can help the HPV "clear up" or stop it from developing into something more. If you are under 26 years old, your insurance should cover it. If older, you can still get it, but you have to pay. It is a series of three shots and costs about $600 total. And about it going away -- well -- it IS a virus, so it does stay in your body, but it can "clear up" enough to have a normal pap result. This is what the doc means by "going away." If you have a normal cells on you cervix -- which means a normal pap result -- HPV is nothing to worry about. There is no way to detect it in men, no way to prevent it in men, but has no ill effects on men either (other than if they get the wart kind). But it doesn't cause cancer in men. THAT'S WHY WE WOMEN MUST GO THROUGH IT ALL! Sorry you are going through this. I hope that I've been helpful. The link below has excellent information about the HPV DNA test and the vaccine.

can take up to 2-5 years without treatment. With treatment it should go away sooner. I asked the exact same question a few weeks ago to my gyno. I have had it for 1 year. Right after they diagnosed me with it I had cryosurgery (burned). Depending on what they see during the culpscopy depends on which treament will be best. Cryosurgery is mildest treatment. It hurts like the culposcopy and about 1/2 hr after you get bad cramps. You bleed for a few days after but its all bearable.

Treatment or not - well my doctor told me now a days if they know it's not the strain that leads to cancer they don't recommend treating it. If its a strain that does lead to cancer (they can find out the strain you have with tissue from the culposcopy) then you definately need treatment - now!

For me - no more treatments since its not the cancer strain. Just pap and wait, culposcopy and wait. You should be able to go to every 6 months pap by now unless you know its the strain that leads to cancer

HPV there are over 100 strains and only a small few are the type that can lead to cancer. it's key to know if you have one of those strains.

HPV will not go away. You do have it for life, and you can spread it to others.

With that said, you probably had an ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) pap, and that's why you've been having repaps every 3 months. Are you continuing to get abnormal paps back? If you are, you were probably scheduled for colposcopy with a biopsy. If you had a colpo and came back with a HSIL, you may have been scheduled for a LEEP.

You may want to ask the gyno why he didn't want to do the procedure and ask your doctor why he did. Decide if it's important to you and find a gyno who will do it if it's what you want.

But, understand that there are tons of women who are going through this, and you're certainly not alone.

most HPV cases DO in fact go away on their own. Talk to your doctor about treatment to speed up the process.

You are right... there are a lot of different kinds of HPV and only a small number of those cause warts.

Are you talking about genital warts? They can be removed through cryosurgery. See another gynocologist. Also get your partner checked and his warts removed. It CAN be cured.
