My sister is about 4 months pregnant. She had a miscarraige with her first pregnancy during the 3rd month. She went to get one of the 4D ultrasounds done rhe other day and they mentioned that her amneotic fluid was cloudy - what would cause this? If it was later inthe pregnancy I wouldn't be as worried 'cause I would just figure it was merconium. She is very good about drinking water. Any ideas? One nurse mentioned that it could be because she ate chocolate the day before - this doesn't sound right to me.
Thanks!

The 4D ultrasound place IS staffed by an Ob/gyn. An RN did the ultrasound.
I loved your moronic answer Sharon R - what a prize you must be in person!

here is a website.. that tells what color the fluid is..i wouldnt expect it to be all that clear due to the fact the babies urinate in it and swallow 95% of the fluid and then it reproduces more each day.. i hope all goes well.

Is Amniotic Fluid Cloudy

The fluid is basically clear or a little cloudy in color. I don't think there's anything to worry about. How in the world would eating chocolate change the color??? Are you sure this was a *nurse* that said this??

The best thing to do is discuss with any concerns with the doctor.

Thie is precisely why I HATE these "storefront" ultrasound places. They aren't staffed by doctors, so any advice handed out by one of their "professional staff" would be extremely questionable at best. If your sister's doctor wants your sister to have an ultrasound, he or she will order one, and it will be done by professionals who know what the hell they are talking about. Your sister needs to get a little smarter, contact her OB/GYN and follow the advice they give her. For God's sake, she has had a miscarriage already, why does she want to deal with ANYONE who is not licensed and qualified?!

Too bad about you, sweetie pie- I happen to be the mother of two and am of above average intelligence- your sister is still a fool for not using her MD for tests and advice. If you don't like my answer, that's your problem.

Did she go to one of those retail places that does ultrasounds? If so, then they are probably not qualified to give that information out. I have never heard of the chocolate thing...very strange. I am like you...I would have thought meconium, but not that early. Sorry I couldn't have been more help.

of course your sister probably knows to talk to her Dr. about that so I'm not going to even suggest the obvious... but i will tell you what my ob told me around 4 months preg... he said that 64oz of water is what we should drink a day...so being pregnant you should consume at least twice that amount...he also said he would be able to tell if i wasn't drinking enough water by the cloudiness of my u/s... does she ever cramp or have days were her uterus contracts a lot? if so i would say you sis isn't getting enough h2o..

hmm-why is the u/s tech discussing that with her? & then giving their 'opinions'?
they really shouldnt be-- in case something like this should occur.
