In the Brit-com "Are you Being Served", they always referred to each other as "Mr" or "Mrs" and rarely called each other by their first names. I know that Colonel Peacock's first name was Steven, but does anyone know the first names of the other characters in the show?

It was Captain Peacock actually. Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries, Shirley Brahms, Cuthbert Rumbold, and Betty Slocum are the ones I remember.. Mr Lucas was once referred to as Dick. I cant remember Mr Grainger, Mr Tebbs or the other few characters they had plus I might have some of the spellings incorrect.

They do refer to each other's first names on rare, personal, occasions. This is a rather French tradition. They have two pronouns for 'you' - 'tu' and 'vous' - 'tu' being the familiar, friendly personal 'you' and 'vous' being the formal address for 'you'. After 1066, the Brits adopted a lot of the civily superior French speech habits. For example, the English name for a swine is 'pig' , the French, 'pork'. At any rate, Mrs Slocombe is 'Betty'; Mr. Humphries is 'Wilberforce', Miss Brahms is 'Shirley' and Mr. Rumbold is 'Cuthbert' etc.....
