I recently had a pc built and they used the floppy drive from my old computer(emachines) and now i cant seem to get it to work at all. When i try to format disks it says that windows cannot complete it or something like that. is there a way to fix this?

I would just remove the floppy drive and purchase a USB key. No one uses floppies anymore as software is to large to fit on them. Can you imagine how floppies you would need to install Windows Vista (BTW it is being released on DVD, tells you how large it is). You can purchase a 2GB USB key for as cheap as $15 today, a new floppy drive will cost twice that, assuming you can find one. You can get external USB floppy drives, but they run around $30.

Is the light on the floppy drive on all the time? Does it ever light up? Does the drive make any noise when you turn the machine on? Does the drive make any noise when you try to format a disk or to read one?

Floppy drives are pretty obsolete. If you have information on some, it really doesn't make any difference that they are, if you need that information.

I would also ask the person who built it. They should have tested it before they gave it back to you.

Make sure the floppy is not write protected. Make sure the little hole on the left bottom of the floppy is covered with the slider, if not the disk is write protected and will not format.

Also, floppies are good for very small files, why spend money on another system to record small bits of information, as you already have this installed.

Beth get a usb stick, it can hold hundreds of floppies!
Floppies are dead now!
Or buy a new floppy drive, it is probably broken.
