If a species from another world were looking for intellectual or economic trade with another species, would it not look for a species that had something of value?

Personally, I think that if aliens are buzzing around our planet in cloaked starships, they probably regard our planet more as an early development live zoo or something. Douglas Adams had it right when it came to how aliens interact with current humankind I think. They come to Earth to PARTY!

As to the second part of your question, I think that's a most definite no. Our government is SO bad at concealing information, you just have to look at the scandals we've had dealing with banal subjects like Watergate, Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky, et al, to understand that the human factor makes it difficult to avoid leaking juicy secrets.

I will say that IF in the unlikely event our government is concealing crashed aliens, the way they do it is genius. Appear incompetent, leak tidbits of information, contradict themselves, and generally appear incompetent without ever having to just throw open the doors at Area 51. Which, they should have to, since we pay for it. The whole "national security" blanket statement doesn't really apply when the saucers start flash frying your populace. It'd be good to get a head's up eh?

In 1961 the astronomer Frank Drake posed this theoretical formula (slightly tongue in cheek) for the chance that the earth might be contacted by Extra-terrestrial life:

N = N* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x fL

Where:
N = the number of Civilizations capable of communicating in our galaxy where:

N* = the number of stars in the milky way
fp = the fraction of stars with planets
ne = the number of planets per star capable of supporting life
fl = the fraction of those planets where life will actually develop
fi = the fraction of that life that becomes intelligent
fc = the fraction of intelligent life that has the means, motive, and opportunity to communicate
fL= the fraction of the planet's lifetime during which the communication might take place.

Hopefully you get the picture. Using this equation, estimates range from nearly 0 to about half a million at most.

I might add (my humble op-pinion) that from all that is known about the laws of the universe today, this commentor considers it pretty much impossible that Aliens might actually visit the earth. It would take thousands of years, and truly huge amounts of energy and resources to get to even the nearest stars.

lastly it is always helpful to remember the famous postulate of William Occam (often misstated). That is, a theory is most likely (though not necessarily correct) if it makes the least number of assumptions. And in order for any explanation to be use-full, it must not only explain "how?", but "how much?"

No, for a few reasons.

First, our government (and all the other ones, for that matter) isn't good enough at hiding things like that. People just can't keep a secret that big for that long.

Second, if ET is smart enough to travel many many light-years to visit us, they are smart enough not to get "caught" by the government. Besides, I would think that they would talk to us long-distance first (which they can easily do with radio communications), before coming down for an actual visit.

Third, why would the government want to hide such a thing?

I believe that it is possible. If it has happened I am sure the government would want to conceal it so people wouldn't panick and also so they can study the alien technology.

Yes, we are being visited. It is kept secret by the government because if it ever became known, many aspects of society would be thrown into chaos by the panic.

Sure.. but why are they concealing it?

It might have been earth-shaking in 1950, but these days? It's virtualy assumed so in pop-culture today.

In the end, it really just doesn't matter.
