And my 2006 GTO 6 speed has over 421 at the rear wheels slightly modified. I'm loveing it! Viper is just the next shot in a salvo of power. Electronic engine controls have done what carbs and cams and headers could never do. Idle smooth, run quietly, start every day, Emit less smog chemicals and spark plugs last 100,000 miles. Insurance companys will be the only killer to such power advancement.

If you're talking about performance cars, probably not. Computer control has made it possible to increase horsepower without ruining fuel mileage.

However, if oil and gas prices continue to rise, that trade-off may end. We COULD make much more economical cars by reducing the horsepower. My Chevy Cobalt has 150 horsepower; it could get along with half that perfectly well. I just took a long trip and averaged 35.2 mpg; imagine what it could do if I were feeding half the horses it has now!

no there's not,,i own a repair shop, and Chrysler corporation is talking about making a street version of the old hemi again with over 600 hp,,and that's a base version,,and all the rest of the car company's are doing similar things also,,i think the horse power war has just began,,the higher gas goes ,the more people want more horse power,,,its kind of going backwards of what it did back in the early and late 70,s they lowered the horse power, but now there going higher with it ,doesn't make much sense,,but we,ll see 500 horse power street cars before long i think,,good luck hope this help,s.

As long as they keep the torque up then HP isn't as important. Also, power to weight ratio is important when considering raw speed.
