I'm making a quilt for my sister (for her wedding). The front is earth-tone color and star patterned and the back has dark green fabric. I want to add my signature to it in some unique way. Any great ideas? I'm willing to put a transfer on it, but am looking for a neat one that would match the theme.

You could make a block similar to the front, but with a blank space for your quilt info. Applique it to the back of the quilt. Don't just put your name - include the occasion, the recipient, the date, and the location, at the very least. If you've named the quilt, include that, and any special history behind the quilt. Put the info on using permanent fabric pens - test it first on some scrap fabric and wash it to make sure it will be permanent. You might have to heat set them. You could also use printable fabric sheets - they go right through your inkjet printer. Check Jo-Ann Fabrics or other craft stores, and read the directions carefully. Make sure it will do what you need. I would NOT recommend using iron on transfers because that tends to fade quickly - within a couple of years. You might also want to consider using a plain square of fabric that you decorated in some way. There are permanent ink stamp pads, so you could stamp a decoration, color it with permanent fabric pens, then write the info.

We probably all sign our quilts differently. I embroider on the back in a corner next to the binding the name of the person for whom I have made the quilt, the month and year, and my own name. I usually use two lines for this.

To keep with the color scheme you are using, you could embroider with tan on the dark green backing, stitching stars before and after the info.

If you prefer not to embroider, use a black or dark green fabric marker to write on a scrap of the starred earth-tone fabric. Trim the block of fabric to 3/4" around the writing and press under 1/4" on each side. Then hand stitch this to the back next to the binding. Marker will not crack or peel like fabric paints sometimes do.

Hi...one of the best ways is to design what you want in a program like Publisher. You can use whatever font you want and can even include clip art if you want. Then, purchase some computer photo transfer fabric from your local quilt shop and print out the design through your inkjet printer for it. Viola! You have an interesting and professional label that is permanent and that you can sew on the back.

When I sign a quilt for a special occasion, wedding, birthday, etc. I hand embroidery my name and date I finished, and with the quilt I enclose a card with the occasion, date, and any other sentiment I choose, and hopefully it will be kept with a scrap book, of coarse, I also sign the card, so at a later date they can recognize the authenticity.

No embroidery machine ??? Take it to someone who has one or buy some fabric paint. It comes in tubes and pens. It's color fast (read directions).
