This depends a lot on where you are. In some places, depending on religious beliefs, they are buried, but in most places, they are cremated for the very good reason that they may carry infections -- septicimia. gangrene or other diseases that were responsible for the amputation in the first place.

Most times, the linb is burned along with other medical waste. But in some cases, Religous and cultural custom calls for the limb to be set aside (normaly as ashes) and buried with the Person when they pass away.

Same thing they do with all surgical tissue specimens - send them to Pathology for analysis, after which they are incinerated.
