Well, there were Sephardic Jews who came along with the Spanish during the 1500s. Not sure if it goes back farther than that though. The first synagogue in the US was Sephardic, though, built by Sephardim whose families fled to the Netherlands after they were expelled from Spain in 1492. The Ashkenazim are newer and very different.
