I notice this alot at the train station platforms.

Perhaps we could also hear from people who do this and get their opinions.

I personally pace because I have trouble just standing in place doing seemingly nothing. (I also have Restless Legs Syndrome.) I am burning calories as well. Those little movements add up throughout the day.

What a great question, and I rated it as such! I see this all the time--in front of office buildings, at bus stops, in public parks, etc.

I'm sure, in some cases, that the news the person is receiving is very serious and merits pacing. Other than that, for some reason people have gotten into the habit...for what reason is hard to say.

I just know, that I too would love to hear some experienced pacers' answers to this question.

They are energetic, and I think it's a feeling of power and control walking back and forth. They have a cell phone and they can bark on it and talk to others, they have pride. Or maybe they don't want to be stopped to talk to, or anyone ask them for directions so they pace!

Well I'm a hand talker. In fact a friend told me once that if we tied my hands to my side I couldn't talk. I think that is the same reason I walk/pace when I'm on a cell or cordless phone. I have to move when I talk.

I myself do that. weather its on the cell phone or my home phone. i find that its just something to do while talking. like when people talk to others using their hands, facial expressions etc. pacing also can be a form of vervousness or being anxious about the topic that is being spoken about.

Because we think were getting more accomplished! I'm not sure why but that's my opinion.
