Some of the questions are really hard to deal with. But these are issues that we must cover prior to getting engaged. Some of the questions I ask him he just clams up and won't talk about. I wonder if I am asking such questions at the right time of day. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you tried writing the questions out for him and allowing him to answer them when he is comfortable answering them? Just a thought that would give him time to think about his answers too.
Best of luck

There probably isn't a good time to ask if he is acting this way but if it's something you want to discus with him then he should make an effort to sit down with you.You didn't make it very clear what kind of questions you had in mind but from the way you made it sound he was having a hard time dealing with it.I think it would be best to tell him that he will have to be more open an honest with you and to have an open communication between both of you before an engagement can happen. This will let him know that he must be willing to share with you in order to make the relationship work.
