Yes, they really are. Even if you don't plan on playing at the college level, it's a good idea to have sports on your application. Colleges are looking for well rounded individuals...good grades, good testing skills, leadership abilities, commitment, organizational abilities, etc. Student athletes have already learned how to balance academics and other activities. This gives them a leg up in the college environment. They are also quite often leaders. It's a big plus.

Only if you are too stupid to not get good grades. Why else would they let those football playing rapists and morons into otherwise good schools? So that the old boys network can have gentlemanly sporting wagers on each others teams. Bottom line: Hit the books or hit the juice if you intend on heading to higher education.
