Perception of public breastfeeding varies in different countries. Taboo in some and OK in others. Some ween by one year, and others not until three. It varies between urban and rural dwellers too.
In Guatemala, for example, public breastfeeding is for the Indigenas, the lowly, but definitely not for the Ladinos (the high). A Ladino would never be caught dead breastfeeding in public like a common Indigena.

I live in Europe, the Czech Republic to be exact. When we first moved here 5 1/2 years ago, I NEVER saw anyone breastfeeding and in fact rarely saw a pregnant woman or newborn.

My have things changed! The govt. has greatly increased the incentives to have children as the population is decreasing. Now there are pregnant women everywhere as well as newborns. Public breastfeeding is not a problem, it is done everywhere and most Moms don't even try to cover up.
Nudity in any form is just not looked down upon here. I certainly don't mind the breastfeeding, but the nudity issue is a whole other story!

Also, it seems that most babies being nursed here are under 6 months old or so.

Glad to be able to nurse my babies here,
Mom to 5 with another on the way

Breastfeeding in public is just ok. It makes some people uncomfortable. I never see any women do it in public. I rarely here about any women breastfeeding for more than a year.

You'll find that all of northern Europe, rural Britain especially in Scotland and Wales, New Zealand, and Scandinavia think it's perfectly fine to do publicly, even in restaurants. I couldn't say how long is right though.
