because supposedly things that hurt you actually help you. like helping you get through another day. its a crutch to help you. to some its sex to others its drugs or alcohol i once new a young girl that would fart in her hand and smell it, she said that the smell hurt her but it made her feel good. hope this helps out sum.

Do you mean like hanging on to a bad relationship? Maybe that's all they have to hang on to - or because there are children involved, or they're under the other persons' control.
