Because it marks to other males, and females, in the area, just how tall - Big and healthy - That male is. The rest of the scent tells how successful as hunters they are, etc, a real resume or calling card. That's why they urinate so frequently, even when not needed, and on top of other dogs's scents. Not to mention, the higher, the better the wind will pick it up and spread it around.
I'd rather have a good mutt than a Blue Dog Democrat.

They lift their legs wherever they pee, not just under trees. This is so that they don't end up peeing on themselves, you ninny. It is also done so that they can mark out their possessions better.

hey--i change into going to assert that really male canines raise their legs, & not merely below a tree! An anatomical massive difference. (also each so often to mark "territory.) i might want to favor to percentage something humourous in this--I once had a Welsh Corgi whose legs were so short, even as he tried to lift his leg he might want to fall over!! Euilcion has given the perfect answer, yet i could not face up to!

They do not want to get urine on themselves. A puppy does not have the strength to hold it's body weight, but once a certain age they start lifting the leg.

So that dogs that come along and sniff it will think it's taller.

Dog pee is the canine newspaper, they tell each other things.

Marking their territory - in their world, it's like leaving a calling card for other dogs to know they were there.
