We are out of town and my baby has a fever of 99.7 (taken rectal). Should I call her doctor or should I give her infant Tylenol and see if it goes down? She is only 8 lbs and was born at 35 weeks. Thanks.

If a temperature reaches 100.7 rectally, then it's time to be concerned. Usually a rectal temperature measures a little higher than an oral one anyway (about .5 to 1 degree difference), though the rectal reading is considered to be the most accurate. Look for other signs like fluid intake (is your baby nursing or drinking formula). Is she lethargic or inconsolable or having other difficulties? If you're unsure, be safe and calm your fears by taking her to the emergency room. Don't feel silly for doing it. If the nurses deem it necessary, they'll probably give her a fluid IV drip to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated, and monitor her temp for any changes.

If your child's fever goes up to 100.4 rectal and higher call the doctor. If the baby looks sick or is crying give her some tylenol if her fever goes into the range above call the doctor. But her temp is about ok now.. Is she wearing alot of clothes?

I guess my opinion is going to differ from some of the others. I say if you are concerned, call her doctor. That is what he/she is there for. I believe a mother has good instincts when it comes to her baby. If you feel like you need to call the doctor, then do it. Make sure to be prepared with information you will be asked for:

Does she have a rash?
Is she eating?
How are her stools?
Is she sleeping normally?

Good luck to you and don't ever be afraid to call the doctor.

This is the advice from my niece's doctor: "If your baby is less than 3 months and has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, call the doctor immediately."

I think with a baby that is so young and so small, you're better safe than sorry. I hope she feels better soon. :)

Some baby's tempertaure can get up to 100. degrees and still be considered fine. If the baby's temperature get's over 100 degrees than you should call a doctor a.s.a.p

My doctor told me to rush my son who is only 10 days old to the hospital if the temp is more than 100.3F a normal temp is between 97.5 to 100.3F but if your child is varry fussy ,two quit not eating well ,or has a cough i would say go to the hopital.

but yah always call your docter when you suspect your child is sick even when your not in town.

That is too low to bother a doctor with. I know it seems high to you, but even at 102 its not high enough to worry with an ER trip. Give her the tylenol and see how she is in the morning. If it gets above 102, then call the Doctor.

I would call your doctors office they usually have an on call number, just to check the dosage, they might want her to see a doctor to rule out RSV.
