You are going to have to look for size charts on the websites you are shopping on. When I say size charts, I mean look for measurements.
In the US there is NO standard set of measurements for any size. An 8 in one manufacturer, may be sized as a 4, 6, 10 or 12 with another. Also shaping can vary. Usually the even sizes (2, 4, 6) are meant for curvier women and the odd sizes (5, 7, 9) are meant for younger women with fewer curves.
The "X:" sizes are plus size and usually mean a size 14 or larger. In other words, these are for larger women and girls.
A "S" might be a 4/6 or a 6/8 or a 3/5 or a 5/7. One company's S might be another's XXS, and yet another company might label it something else.
Jeans are often listed by waist size, but even here it can be confusing as the question becomes, "is that the actual measurement of the waistband of the jeans, the wearer's measurement at the natural waist, or what the wearer should measure at the point where they hit the hips or waist?"
So it IS very confusing and to make matters worse, sizing isn't even always consistent within the same manufacturer. The only way to be sure is to try it on.
Soooooo...my best recommendation is to only buy from merchants that will let you return anything you don't like. Most have a customer service phone number; don't be afraid to call first and ask for more specific information.
I do shop successfully online, but often either stick to brands I know fit me consistently, buy where I can send it back or get it so cheaply I don't care (I often buy lots on ebay but my two daughters are similar in size so if it doesn't fit me, it usually fits one of them or I resell the extra stuff on ebay).
Good luck. I'm sorry I couldn't ease your frustrations better.

uk 10 = us 8 = europe 38
uk 12 = us 10 = europe 40
and so on, you'll notice that there are the same number of characters in each group, they each correspond to the other.
s= us 6-8
m=us 10-12
l= us 12-14
xl = 16-18
xxl = 18-22
xxxl = 22+
