The Earth is currently stuck in an Ice age pattern where we spend ~100,000-120,000 years in an ice age followed by brief inter-glacial periods of around 25,000 years. The last ice age ended ~10,000 years ago and a new one should start in another 15,000 years or so. During the previous interglacial warm perion, known as the Emian period, both polar ice caps completly melted, only to re-freeze again at the start of the last ice age.
I believe that it is clear that there WILL be another ice age in about 15,000 years from now. There is nothing you and I can do to change this fact. All the people in the world can happily "care about the environment" all they want to, but we will still have another ice age in 15,000 years, so get used to it.

Actually.. we're about due for the 'next' one, as is. Not even concidering Global Warming as a factor.

It's likely billions would survive. India itself wouldn't have any substantial population loss due to cold, since it's so near the Equator. There's a billion and a half right there. Of course, the preceeding flooding would do a number.

The biggest polluters are in places to be, in a stroke of poetic justice, most effected by an ice age.

Burning a tree because you're cold is irrelevant to Environmentalism. What an Environmentalist is against is you turning up your thermostat because the only sweater you have that isn't dirty looks silly on you.

Literalist thinking like that is a lame excuse to justify lazyness and ignore personal responsability.

The response below me fails to mention that what he means is there is nothing we can do to stop one from ever occouring again, but that much of the data indicates there is plenty we can do to speed the process up.

I guess the difference is between one occouring.. well.. soonish and one occouring in 10,00 years. I'd prefer 10,000 years myself.

He also fails to mention that when he says 'about 25,000' years, that means 'give or take a few thousand years'.

All signs, no matter what your view of the subject, are scientificly speaking, pointing towards 'be careful' at bare minimum.

If there were only hundreds of humans on the earth, we couldn't do much at all to the environment anymore. There would be much more important things to worry about, like how to not go extinct.
