Ive had my braces now for about a year, and the original estimate was for a year and a half. However, my teeth are all straightened out (I only got braces to close a gap in my front teeth, which closed after the first two months.) Right now I dont even KNOW what theyre working on, they took away my binders, so its not my bite, and theyve stopped working on my teeth. I mentioned getting them off early, but my ortho wouldnt say anything. Are they just trying to get more money? Can I get them off early?

If it helps, heres an added problem...theyve taken off the connected elastics (instead theres the little individual ones on each bracket) and my three of my teeth have actually started to drift in the past 3-4 months...but when I point it out, they say "oh yes they'll do that sometimes" but do nothing to start correcting them again! Im just getting frustrated because I really want them OFF

Braces have to stay on to reinforce the position they are in. If you were to take them off now, even with a retainer they would shift around.

You will get a retainer regardless of how early or late you get your braces off. However, I would encourage you to keep your braces on for as long as your orthodontist has planned for you to wear them. Just because your teeth "look perfectly fine" doesn't necessarily mean all is well - there are often more serious problems that can occur if you get your braces off early. Braces don't just straighten your teeth, they also help align everything to relieve your jaw of stress, and make things more comfortable for you in the long run. I would highly suggest talking directly to your orthodontist about this one. :)

Your ortho is probably just waiting for your bone structure to solidify. Remember, you're still a growing girl and if he/she takes the braces off prematurely, your teeth will drift back and then you'll have to spend even more money to get it done right a second time. Whether it takes eighteen months or twenty-two months, I seriously doubt if the original dollar amount will be affected. Orthodontist are perfectionist, so please, isn't a perfect smile worth a little more time?

I used to have braces, and my orthodontist said that I would need them on for 2-3 years. I got them off after one year with perfectly straight teeth.

Try talking to your orthodontist about getting them off early. If they think you should leave them on, ask them what they are working on your teeth right now.

There may be a reason to leave them on a little longer, even if your teeth look great now. There's not really much you can do now besides talking to your orthodontist, but just think of how great your smile will be when you get the braces off finally!

I'm the same way. I was orginally supposed to have 'em for 2 years, but i'm probably gonna be getting them off by the end of this year. Next time you go ask them. (Afterall, they're the professional) I know when I asked my ortho, she showed me my x-rays and what she was still correcting.

i was supposed to have mine for 3 and a half years and i got mine off a little after a year. mine went straight quickly but you have to wait for them to settle. and please always wear your retainers!! you have to wear them at all times at first, then just at night for the rest of your life. i stopped wearing mine and now my teeth are messed up again. there is still a chance you can get them off early just follow their orders and wait patiently.
