I want to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison and have already been accepted there. My problem is because I now reside in Florida, (I have lived in FL starting last year, but the rest of my life was spent in WI) my mom wants me to stay in-state and go to Florida State University (where I have also been accepted).

What are some good, convincing arguments to persuade her to let me go where I know I will be happier academically and socially?? Thanks.

Is this a money issue (ie residency?) Perhaps there's a way you can move back and stay with someone in WI, allowing you to tap into the in-state tuition. Maybe then she'd be more accepting.

Or you could offer to take loans out, or pay for part of the tuition, etc.

If money isn't the issue, then just do your best to explain that UW/Madison is your top-choice school, that you feel the "fit" is best there for you academically and socially, and that you feel you'll have the best success there...academically and "happiness"-wise.

She may be concerned about having you so far away. For example, I've got one son who's in college 2 1/2 hours away, which is great...just a quick drive in an emergency, and easier to get home for holidays, etc. You will have to take planes, which adds to the cost and logistics difficulties of getting your stuff to and fro. And, there's no quick reunion in an emergency situation.

I'm REALLY hoping my second son will end up in a 5ish hour radius from our home...but if he was passionate about a school across the country and truly believed that it was the right place for him, even I would have to consider it...and I've talked their whole lives about keeping them close. In the end, it's his life, primarily his decision (if money isn't an issue) and he has to live with it and make the most of his time in college.

Good luck to you. If you do end up at FSU, make the best of it. It could be you ended up there for a "reason" beyond your mother wanting you to go there.

College is about you, and you need to be where you "fit." If that's Wisconsin (though I can't imagine why you'd prefer 40 below zero to Florida climate) then that's probably where you will be most successful.

You need your parents' support for college, so it's important to include them in your planning. But ultimately, it comes down to where you will work hard, focus and succeed. Try making a list of the pros and cons for both schools. Be fair about the Florida option, and then sit down calmly and discuss it with your mom. Find out why your mom wants you in Florida. Is this about a boyfriend? Is it about the distance or is it about money?

If it's about money, you might be stuck. It will cost you a lot more to attend an out of state school, than a Florida public school.

Good luck and best wishes for success wherever you attend!

You could tell her that you are constantly harassed by bums in Tallahassee and it makes you uncomfortable.
