This may not explain ALL the teen pregnancies, but I think a major problem is that many school sex ed programs are promoting and pushing abstinence rather than educating teens on the results or effects of sexual intercourse. And I think they should also educate teens on the psychological effects of having sex too young. Some schools are great and have an excellent sex ed program, others barely touch on it, and still others don't give teens enough credit and forget they are curious and have free will.

Also, I'm no sociologist, but I noticed at my school that only one girl in my grade got pregnant (out of about 300 students) and in the grade below me with the same amount of students probably at least 20 or more girls got pregnant. Maybe it's a co-hort effect? I do think that some girls want to get pregnant and have a baby for numerous reasons and if their best friend is pregnant then they are more apt to be okay if they "accidentally" get pregnant.

Just my opinion.

Younger people don't tend to think things through- like using protection. which means they use bad judgment. that why the law is set up to 18 year olds. they are hoping from that age on they will use better judgment. So young girls are often easily led to believe they are loved and nothing bad will happen. That is how a lot of underage pregnancies occur. If girls and guys were waiting until they were a little more mature to have sex this rate would go down. But even adults make stupid decisions and use bad judgement

It's also illegal to do drugs, exceed the speed limit, lie on your taxes, drive while intoxicated, and get into fisfights, and people still do those things every day. It's called "reckless disregard" for the law, and the suspension of reasonable or sensible thinking in lieu of instant gratification.

And you might want to have another peek at that map you posted a link to, because it seems to me that a good portion of America is shaded to assert that the legal age of consent is either 16 or 17.

When do you have to be a certain age to have sex? A lot of teenagers lose their virginity around 16 (and that is being conservative). The age of consent means nothing in America or the world because if a teenager wants to have sex, their ultimately going to have sex. And sadly, since parents don't teach their kids about sex anymore, STD and pregnancy rates are going to remain high.
PS: Thousands of kids in this country (USA) are raped or molested before they are even teenagers, hows that for "age of consent".

Actually, it varies from state to state on that map. It can range anywhere from 16 to 18, but I wonder if that's for marriage and not just sexual relations.

There seems to be a lot that you don't want here.

All you want is an answer to a stupid question.

OK! There are so many teen pregnancies because teens have sex without using contraceptives.

Because it is only enforced when one person is a minor whereas the other person is not. In other words, in cases of statutory rape.

It is not illegal for two 14 year olds to have sex together. It is illegal, however, for a 14 year old to have sex with someone 18+

unfortunately, many parents don't educate their kids about sex, birth control, and STDs and tv makes teens think lots of casual sex is the norm for the 20's crowd. You know how much 12 year old girls want to be grown up.
